MTV Australia Makes Fun of Eva Longoria And America Ferrera’s Accent

MTV Australia messed up big time and are probably now in the market for a new community manager. During the Golden Globe awards last Sunday night, the Music Television affiliate posted a distasteful tweet regarding America Ferrera and Eva Longoria’s accent, and now Latinos all over the world are condemning the network as racist.

“Where are the English subtitles? We have no idea what @AmericaFerrera and @EvaLongoria are saying,” wrote the Australian channel during the award ceremony.

Of course, the Tweet was promptly deleted once it caught fire, but if Kim Kardashian taught us anything, is that we must always screenshot the evidence, so here you have the original tweet.

The celebrated actresses were on stage to award the best actor in a television series drama category, but before announcing the winner, both actresses decided to take a little jab at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for confusing the names of the actresses in the past.

“Hi, I’m Eva Longoria, not Eva Mendes,” said the Empire actress. “And hi, I’m America Ferrera, not Gina Rodriguez,” said Amy from Superstore, who was previously mixed up with the “Jane the Virgin” actress on the official Golden Globes Twitter back in 2015.

Clearly, both stars were speaking perfect English, making MTV’s Australia tweet all that more confusing to its Latino audience, who were clearly offended by the uncalled insult.

Ella Ceron, the digital west coast and evening editor of Teen Vogue, was able to reply the Tweet before it was deleted. “I would call you out on this @MTVAUSTRALIA but as I’m Latina, you might not understand what I’m typing here,”

With such a high profile personality calling you out on your mistakes, it wasn’t long before MTV Australia deleted the tweet and issued an apology. “We get it was a bad call. We’ll leave the humor to @rickygervais.” Tweeted the network later.

Hey, we get it, among Latinos we make fun of each other accents all the time, but you have to get invited into the inner circle if you want to join in on the fun. Unless the people of MTV Australia know how to prepare some killer enchiladas, dance salsa, play futbol (not soccer) and fix anything that’s broken with gray duct tape, then they probably shouldn’t be trying to be cute by calling us out in our sensual beautiful accents.

It’s ok though, no hard feelings, we still love you.
