Daddy Yankee Drops Out Of Latin Grammy Ceremony Because He Doesn’t Want To Sing Despacito

It seems that reggaeton sensation Daddy Yankee wants to be taken seriously as an artist and explore new musical frontiers. The global phenomenon of ‘Despacito’ will forever set in stone Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s name in the history books of the Latin and global music scene. Last Thursday, November 16, in the Latin Grammys the hit single, amassed four awards including best song and best recording of the year.

However, and even though the ‘Gasolina’ singer was in town during the award ceremony working on the promotion of his new video “Vuelve” alongside Bad bunny, Yankee skipped the ceremony, claiming he wants to work on new music and not just perform Despacito over and over again.

“Songs have their moment and we have to evolve. That doesn’t mean we will stop singing them, but a new song like this has to evolve and in case that’s what I think,” said the singer during an interview with el Nuevo Dia. “I would have wanted that my presentation would something new, but since we couldn’t reach an agreement I decided to turn the page.”

Even though the singer has assured us that he has “turned the page and turned it ‘rapidido’ (the opposite of despacito),” he didn’t discard the possibility of singing the song again in the future. “I will never stop singing it but there’s a moment for everything and I don’t like draining out the public, I just don’t like it.” The singer sentenced.

Without the presence of Daddy Yankee, the production staff at the award ceremony presented a special version of Despacito that clearly sealed the most anticipated night of this song with a metaphorical kiss, Luis Fonsi was joined on stage by no other than fan favorites Bomba Estereo, Victor Manuelle and Diplo.

The ‘Despacito’ single and music video was released on January 12, 2017, by Universal Music Latin. The video shows both artists performing the song in La Perla neighborhood of Old San Juan, Puerto Rico and the local bar La Factoría, these places suffered grave damages during the hurricane. The song was written by Fonsi, Erika Ender and Daddy Yankee, and was produced by Andrés Torres and Mauricio Rengifo.
