Brazilian Striker Robinho Sentenced To Nine Years In Prison For Rape

Brazilian footballer Robson de Souza better known as Robinho was sentenced to nine years in prison last Thursday, November 23, for his participation in the 2013 gang rape of a woman in the city of Milan, Italy, where he was playing with AC Milan at the time.

The Italian court ruled that the forward along with five other friends are responsible for the sexual assault of an unidentified 22-year-old Albanian woman whom they first got heavily drunk at a popular Italian nightclub called ‘Sio Café’ on the night of January 22, 2013.

According to Brazilian journal ‘La Stampa’, the victim already knew Robinho and some of his friends from previous occasions. Details also indicate that the woman was with two other friends and that the Brazilian forward was accompanied by his wife Vivian Guglielminetti.

The victim says that after her two friends left and Robinho had taken his wife home and then returned to the club, the footballer and his friends started offering the woman multiple alcoholic drinks, she says that she was forced to drink to the point where she was unconscious and unable to stop what was about to happen next.

Italian authorities based their investigation on the recounts of the night that the event occurred and on DNA prints found on the woman’s dress for that night. They concluded that the men had taken the unconscious woman to the night club’s wardrobe where they took advantage of her drunken stage and proceeded to take turns raping her multiple times.

Robinho was not in court at the time but pleaded not guilty through his attorney, his sentence will now be put on hold until the appeal process is completed. The 33-year-old player continued playing for AC Milan for one more year after the incident but after a string of disappointing performances he left the club in 2014 and returned to his home country Brazil where he started playing with Santos, before leaving to China in 2015.

The striker who now exercises his trade in Atletico Mineiro posted a third-person message in Portuguese on his Instagram account where he denies the accusations towards him. “On news involving striker Robinho, over an event that happened a few years ago, we clarify that he already defended himself against the charges, saying he had no participation in the episode. All legal steps are already being taken regarding this decision in the first instance.”
