Woman Pleads Guilty To Marrying Her Mom After Being Found With Her

Misty Velvet Dawn Spann, a 26-year-old Oklahoma woman has been sentenced to 10 years probation after pleading guilty to incest chargers. Last year, Misty was married to her biological mother, who’d lost custody of her. The woman was supposed to go into a bench trial on Tuesday but instead pleaded guilty for marrying her 44-year-old mother Patricia Ann Spann.

The Oklahoma Department of Corrections will supervise 2 of Misty’s 10 years deferred sentence and will also order counseling for her. The mother, who is also charged with incest, is set to appear in court in January, the 44-year-old woman was once married to her son as well, but he had the marriage annulled after claiming incest.

Patricia, who is yet to plead guilty to the incest charges, and her daughter Misty were both arrested on September 12, 2016, after authorities discovered that the two had been illegally married. Patricia claims that she reconnected with Misty back in 2014 and that the two had “hit it off.” The mother lost custody of her three children when they were still young.

The mother told authorities that she thought that marrying Misty wouldn’t violate the law given that her name was not on the amended birth certificate that was created after losing her children’s custody. The woman identified herself as Patricia Ann Clayton on their marriage license application that was filed in March 2016 in Comanche County.

Oklahoma considers incest to be a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison. According to the Tulsa World Reports, it was Misty the one to file for an annulment “by reason of illegality and fraud,” she claims that at the time her mother had told her that their marriage was legal based on some counseling she had received.

Cody Spann, one of Patricia’s sons spoke with People magazine and said that his mother is an alleged “predator” who “forced” his brother and sister to marry Patricia. Cory also claims that the woman threatened to kill them if they did not comply.

“I think she’s just a sick, twisted individual that has something messed up in her head,” said the 25-year-old son to People last September. “Why would you want to be with one of your own kids? Patricia’s a very disgusting and horrible person.”

Cody claims that once Patricia reentered their lives, she said that she was a friend instead of their biological mother. Patricia then married his brother Jody after becoming close, but when they returned to Oklahoma they learned that they were actually related.

“My grandmother looked at my brother and told him that was his mom,” Cody recalled to People. “My brother … said that he wanted to get away from her – that was not what he wanted. And she threatened to kill him. She threatened to poison him.”

“My sister was manipulated and scared into this. Was she an adult? Yes, she was. But my sister was scared,” Cody said.
