Becky G’s latest single “Mayores” has generated controversy these days because of its sexually explicit lyrics, the hit single has been diffused all over the media and on social networks as well, a situation that has angered many users because of their beliefs that the song encourages young people to pursue romantic relationships with older people (or men specifically).
“A mí me gustan más grandes, que no me quepa en la boca” (I like them bigger, that they can’t fit my mouth) says the 20-year-old singer on her reggaeton song while rapper Bad Bunny sings in the chorus, “conmigo no hacen falta los juguetes, yo todavía nuevo de paquete, pero si te gusta abusar con otro vete” (with me you don’t need toys, I’m fresh off the package, but if you like to take advantage then leave with another).
In only a few days, “Mayores” became a hit in Latin America, the song can be heard in every corner of the continent and what concerns society is that the song is being mostly enjoyed by minors, which happen to be the main audience of the Mexican-American singer.
The reggaeton phenomenon has really generated an impact among the young crowd, a few days ago the songs were interpreted by a number of performers in the region’s musical contest shows like “Operacion Triunfo” and “Viva la Vida”, however the show’s executives asked the performers to change lyrics of the song to fit their network’s policies, something that sparked an array of protests among the performers who had already rehearsed the original version of the song.

Last Friday, November 17, a group of young girls singing “Mayores” effusively at a Guadalupe school in the Mexican state of Nuevo Leon was caught on tape, the video which was widely circulated on every social media platform has opened the debate on whether these type of songs should be allowed in public spaces or not.
The video has now gone viral and has amassed close to 6 million views on Facebook, more than 36,000 reactions and over 70,000 shares. In the video, there are girls as young as 8-years-old who are singing along Becky’s raunchy lyrics.

This isn’t the first attempt of the public or media to censor Becky G, the singer has previously denounced that if she was a male performer like Maluma or Enrique Iglesias, that people would not have any problems with her lyrics.
