Families that were separated for years by immigration issues could reunite for a brief moment through a muddy lake in Rio Grande last Wednesday between the US and Mexico. This meeting was a momentary treatment organized by immigrants with the help of The Border Network for Human Rights and supervised by Border Patrol.
There were rules that were used to carry out the meeting, people who came from Mexico should wear white shirts and blue shirts those who came from United States. It was a really moving moment because it was observed reunited husbands with their wives and grandmothers who saw for the first time to their grandchildren and held them on their arms. There were tears, laughter and faces full of hope, this day 100 families could live an unforgettable moment for a period no longer than two hours.
Since 2008, the United States has deported nearly 3 million people. Children deserve to have in their homes to their parents. This is a fundamental human right and still without any reason their rights are not respected, well they are innocent of all political and social problems that happen.
There are no few children living in the United States whose parents are illegal immigrants, in fact, there are about 5.3 million and the great majority born in the United States. The constant threat of deportation cases can cause a lot of stress and anxiety in children with or undocumented parents and relatives. It has been shown that 75% of children whose parents are undocumented immigrants have experienced symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.
Definitely, it was an emotional day for these families as they reunite, this kind of events occurs because if they visit Mexico, their status would make it hard for them to return to their homes in the US.
“It’s a huge emotion, I really wanted to see my uncle” said Guadalupe Ramirez, a Mexican Citizen. There are 11 million undocumented immigrants in the US, President Barack Obama has tried to introduce reforms through congress to ease their threat of deportation and make it possible for them to visit their families in their countries but deadlock amongst lawmakers has seen the issue stall and deportations have been rising.
iaImmigrants have sent letters to the pope Francis in Spanish and English, asking him please discuss the issue of immigration and deportation in the United States, about the hundreds of immigrants who have lost their lives trying to cross the border and others who with every effort , sweat and blood have raised and built this country.
