We all know by now which song is officially the catchiest one of 2017. With 3.5 BILLION views and counting, “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi and ft. Daddy Yankee is, whether you love it or hate it, one of the most successful songs ever made. You can hear it absolutely anywhere in the world, and a Latino can find some satisfaction on hearing German tourists attempt to sing it in Spanish.
Sesame street has always been notorious with their parodies, turning television shows, songs and movies into a delightful kid-friendly watch. “Despacito” can be harmless enough for those who don’t bother with translations, so Earnie can sing to his heart content about his favorite thing in the world: Rubber duckies.
There are a lot of great things about the parody, from Earnie singing in Spanish, the excellent rhyme and adaptation of the original, to the initial beach shot, but the very best part is Bert exclaiming reluctantly at the beginning: “Not this song again!” Just to end up singing it and admitting its catchiness at the end. Just like the rest of us. His buzzkill comments about how ducks actually go quack are pure comedy gold.
The video shows Ernie with Rosita providing both a funny Spanish guitar lyric and bilingual lyrics (“El patito es tu buen amigo!”). The song wouldn’t be complete without the appearance of the beloved Bert. After Ernie sings his verse, “You might even say we’re two birds of a feather,” Bert stops and says, “Ernie, you are not a bird and he is made of rubber!”
Just like us, now even Bert can escape the famous “Despacito”/”El Patito” melody, humming as he dances away in the clip!
The video’s success is no accident. After debuting back in January, the “Despacito” remix featuring Justin Bieber has been the No. 1 song in America the entire summer. Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankees hit is currently No. 1 on Youtube and The Song of the Summer, it has officially tied with Mariah Carey’s hit ‘One Sweet Day’ for most weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.
“Despacito” is also the most-liked YouTube video of all time! The video was directed by Carlos Perez and shot in San Juan, Puerto Rico in December 2016.
And without further ado, enjoy El Patito featuring Earnie and Rubber Duckie. ¡Oh, el patito es mi favorito!
