24-year-old rapper Cardi B is the hottest thing out there right now, her hit single ‘Bodak Yellow’ reached No. 1 on the Billboard charts, prompting an avalanche of congratulatory messages on social media, including a flower bouquet from Taylor Swift, who’s single “Look What You Made Me Do” was bumped out of place by Cardi B.
“Sooo beautiful and lovely. Thank you @taylorswift for the flowers …. and I freaking love your music .” wrote Cardi B on her Instagram about Taylor’s gift. “That was so beautiful; [Taylor Swift] such a sweetheart,” Cardi B said to PEOPLE. “I’ve always been a fan. When I knew it was me and her competing for that No. 1 spot, I was like, ‘Oh why it have to be Taylor Swift?!’ I love her. I don’t really like saying, ‘Knock her off’ — she knocked everybody off!”

However, we all know that Taylor Swift can often be a bit passive-aggressive about her intentions, so let’s focus instead on Rihanna’s awesome gesture. Last Thursday night, the unfiltered and flashy diva posted an Instagram video story, where she excitedly shows her fan copious amounts of make-up from RiRi’s Fenty Beauty Collection.
“Look what I got!” yelled Cardi off camera, “I know you make-up artists is jealous,” the singer added, captioning her story with “Got my FENTYBEAUTY B****!!!
“Bodak Yellow” is only the second song by an unaccompanied female rapper to ever top the chart, Lauryn Hill’s 1998 track, “Doo Wop (That Thing)” was the first, so you can see how this big a deal this really is. Also since Mya and Lil Kim’s collaboration on 2001’s “Lady Marmalade” with Pink and Cristina Aguilera, no black female rapper had appeared on a No. 1 hit since then.

The unapologetic take no prisoners style of Cardi B can be a very empowering for black and brown women everywhere, especially in these racially charged times, where minorities have often feel left out, from pop culture and media alike. Her success opens up the possibility for a debate about the democratization of cultural spaces. Cardi B’s talent did not occur in a vacuum, if opportunities were available for people from marginalized communities, we could see a more diverse and rich cultural scenario for everyone.
Congratulations Cardi B on your success! You’re an inspiration for everyone and an example of the rewards of hard and honest work, we hope to see more of your singles up in the charts soon!
