Bettina Rodriguez Aguilera is a politician in Florida and former Doral City Council member who is now running for a seat in Congress. The thing that makes Rodriguez Aguilera stand out from her competition is that she claims to have had contact with extraterrestrial beings.
She announced her candidacy for Congress in August, soon after Ros-Lehtinen – the first Latino woman elected to Congress – said she would retire. Ros-Lehtinen is Cuban-American and represents most of Miami and Miami Beach, which Rodriguez Aguilera hopes to do.
“I had several people from the community call me and ask me to consider running,” she told the Miami Herald. “I have been involved in community activism, human rights, economic development and international affairs all my life. I feel that this is a good fit for me.”
Rodriguez Aguilera says she first saw the aliens when she was seven-years-old and claims she boarded their spaceship. The now 59-year-old describes the three beings she saw – two women and one man – as tall, blonde, full-figured aliens with robes on who spoke telepathically.
According to Rodriguez Aguilera, the aliens explained to her that “God is a universal energy, not a person. It’s in everything. God talks to people and they understand it in different ways, but there’s only one religion.” She said she saw the same being in her teenage years as well, saying their arms were wide open, reminiscent of Jesus Christ.
“For years people, including Presidents like Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter and astronauts have publicly claimed to have seen unidentified flying objects and scientists like Stephen Hawking and institutions like the Vatican have stated that there are billions of galaxies in the universe and we are probably not alone. I personally am a Christian and have a strong belief in God, I join the majority of Americans who believe that there must be intelligent life in the billions of planets and galaxies in the universe.” – Bettina Rodriguez Aguilera
Political pundits believe she has no chance of replacing Ros-Lehtinen, especially in light of her controversial claims. Although she’s refrained from talking about the subject, people already think of her as a crazy lady who’s imagination is a bit too wild.
At least 12 other candidates are in the race to replace Ros-Lehtinen, and most belong to the Democratic party. Two of the best contenders are Raquel Regalado and Bruno Barreiro, who are more popular than Rodriguez Aguilera in the Miami-Dade County area.
The two have raised significantly more money than Rodriguez Aguilera, as well, and they never made bold and unpopular claims. On the bright side, Rodriguez Aguilera is getting more coverage thanks to her past statements, and there’s no such thing as bad press.
