The ‘Narcos’ 40-second teaser, released by Netflix this Tuesday, got fans everywhere excited for the new additions to the cast. As the Narcos theme song begins to play, the name ‘Diego Luna’ appears, followed by ‘Michael Peña’ in explosions of white dust.
Its dark, rapid guitar strumming begins playing while a slowly rising mariachi hat greets the viewer. A guitar and the rest of a mariachi band appear after that.
‘Narcos’ will officially be shifting the Colombia-set series to Mexico. This time, focusing on the Guadalajara cartel in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s.
“Guadalajara is not only the birthplace of mariachi and tequila, but it’s also the home of the newest season of Narcos, coming 2018,” read a tweet on the ‘Narcos’ account.
Michael Peña’s role is still a mystery, but he will become a regular character on the show. Diego Luna, well known for his appearance on ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,’ will replace Pedro Pascal, who portrayed Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agent, Javier Peña, as the new leading man for the DEA.
Producers left Javier Peña’s story with an open ending. Showrunner Eric Newman warned viewers that the third season’s final scene would be the last for Pascal.
“I do think that we’ve told Peña’s story pretty effectively,” Eric Newman told The Hollywood Reporter. “It was a part of the plan as early as season two, of phasing out the show’s star.”
“The design was always to finish out the Colombian story and the players that we’ve come to know there, and then start anew in Mexico,” he added.
Although the fourth season will no longer follow Javier Peña’s story, Newman would not completely rule out the possibility that Pascal could make an appearance.
Critics contemplate that Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman will get introduced as one of the new characters on the villains’ side, as “Chapo was there at the beginning.”
