“Hannah, if you are reading this, then surgery did not go well. I’m sorry,” Margaret’s last letter to her daughter begins, “I tried my best to beat this terrible disease but I guess God had other things for me to do.” ‘Peggy’ as she was affectionately known by her family and friends passed away last Tuesday during the evening after a long battle with stage 4 kidney cancer. In this letter to her beloved 18-year-old college freshman daughter, Peggy provided her with guidance and reassured her love for her, while also letting her know what a “wonderful nurse” Hannah will become after graduating, and of how proud she is of her. “Remember that I am still with you and still just as proud of you as I always have been,” wrote the late mother.

Hannah Summers spoke with Buzzfeed about how much her mother meant to her and how hard it was to say goodbye to her best friend. Peggy wrote this letter back in June when she was diagnosed with cancer, she was going through a very risky medical procedure and decided not to take the chance of not having any last words for Hannah and her siblings to whom she also wrote letters. “If you have kids someday make sure they know how much I love them and wanted to be there to see them.” wrote Peggy who was not allowed the time to become a grandmother. Hannah went with her heart and shared the beautifully heart-wrenching letter on her Twitter account. “I wasn’t going to share the letter at first but the more I read it the more I felt like I had to,” she said to Buzzfeed.

“It perfectly shows the kind of person my mom was, so loving and caring and always worried about others more than herself,” Hannah continued. “I can’t even imagine how hard it was for her to write the letter, but she knew it was something that we would need in order to get some type of closure.” To the moment, Hannah’s viral tweet has had over 225,000 likes, 67,000 retweets, and over 1,000 comments showing support to the nursing student.
I am so very sorry. It is so hard. I have been motherless for 9 days and still doesn’t feel real. Big hugs to you and your sister. ❤️
