A loud, chaotic scene took place at a Walmart parking lot around 10 PM this Black Friday. A Lynn, MA man attempted to run over at least four Latino shoppers with his red sedan.
56-year-old Robert J. McCarthy Jr. got taken into police custody and is now pleading not guilty to four counts of attempted murder, four counts of assault with intent to intimidate based on race or national origin and a count on threatening sexual assault against a teenage boy. The boy was walking by with his family at the time of the assault.
After police arrived at the scene, bystanders identified the perpetrator. “That’s him,” witnesses told the police. “He was only going after Spanish people, saying he was going to kill all the Spanish people.”
According to a Walmart employee, shortly before the incident occurred, the man had been kicked out of the store for disorderly conduct. He says McCarthy was throwing items around the store and yelling things about immigration in both English and Spanish.
In addition to the civil rights charges he faces, McCarthy is also facing charges of annoying or accosting, driving to endanger, and disorderly conduct. The penalty for all he did could cost him up to three years in jail and a $5000 fine.
