‘Locos Por Juana’ is a bilingual Latin alternative fusion band and winners of both a Latin and Miami-based Grammy. Now they’re taking an activist stance with their Latino-sound version of the United States’ national anthem to raise awareness about DREAMers.
Itagui Correa, the band’s vocalist, recently acquired legal U.S. residency and he feels ecstatic about it. The other band-members were once DREAMers themselves, so they teamed up with the Hispanic Heritage Foundation, and Emmy-nominated filmmaker Milcho, to develop the #WeDreamAmerica campaign.
#WeDreamAmerica urges Congress to grant undocumented immigrant minors development, relief, education and the opportunity to get citizenship in a way that doesn’t involve their parents. To do so, they must pass a clean DREAM Act by Saturday or put hundreds of thousands of lives at stake.
This music video is but one of many campaigns people all around the U.S. are making to pressure Congress to include the DREAM Act in the spending bill before the holiday recess. The clock is ticking until December 22nd when it will be officially known if everyone’s combined efforts gave fruit.
A #DreamActNow rally is set to occur in Washington, D.C. this Wednesday. “One reason why I did this project is because I was a DREAMer myself,” Correa says. The singer fled Colombia’s violence in the early 90’s along with his father and two sisters.
The Hispanic Heritage Foundation’s mission is to promote cultural pride, accomplishment, and the great promise of the Latino community. ‘Locos Por Juana’ is all about that, as well.
