In a world in which personal data is a valuable resource, securing the security of that data is a primary concern for both individuals and companies of all sizes. A single breach can expose customers to financial loss, identity theft or even lawsuits. There are many ways to safeguard personal information and prevent hacking.
TAKE STOCK
Review the amount of sensitive information your company holds in computer files and on servers and create a plan to protect it only for as long as necessary. This could include taking inventory of devices that collect personal data, such as PIN pads and security cameras, as well as identifying computer connections to external sources, such as the internet and computers used by service providers to help support your network, or digital copiers.
SCALE DOWN
Limit access to sensitive information only to those who need it. This reduces the potential of the threat of an insider attack or loss from hackers. Pro tip: Apply a principle called least privilege. Give new accounts the lowest access level to sensitive data. Then increase that privilege as the account gains seniority or the job requirement grows.
It is locked. IT
Passwords should be secure, complex and unique. Passwords that are easy to guess can be cracked in a matter of minutes and used to gain unauthorised access. Also, avoid sending passwords in plain text through e-mail and be sure to encrypt any document that contains confidential or private information.
