Mexican-American Comedian George Lopez rubbed the audience of a gala for juvenile diabetes in Denver the wrong way, after his anti-Donald Trump jokes got him booed off the stage.
According to Fox News sources, the joke that started all the commotion was about Donald Trump’s proposed border wall, “I guess you can get some Mexicans to do it cheaper and they wouldn’t crush the tunnels underneath.” The didn’t respond like the comedian would have expected and in an effort to lighten the mood he said, “Are you El Chapo people?’ in reference to the infamous captured drug kingpin who made use of a tunnel to escape prison once.
Tables at the event where being sold from $5,000 to $100,000, with the purpose of raising money for the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes. Trump supporter and Liberal media CEO Greg Maffei who had just donated $250,000 himself for the charitable event was allegedly sitting in the front row and asked Lopez in polite fashion to tone it down with the anti-Trump jokes, while the comedian was still up on stage.
Sources claim that Lopez responded to Maffei’s request “Thank you for changing my opinion on old white men, but it doesn’t change the way I feel about orange men.” At this moment, the audience started to turn on the comedian who was unwilling to cave into the pressure and came up with a quick fauxpology. “Listen, it’s about the kids . . . I apologize for bringing politics to an event. This is America — it still is. So I apologize to your white privilege.”
Soon after that, the crowd started to slowly quiet down and there was a feeling of awkwardness in the Carousel Ball. Lopez then started congratulating the attendees’ efforts into looking for a cure for childhood diabetes and proceeded to announce a video segment, before getting off the stage to never return.
Denver FOX TV host Chris Parente posted on Twitter, that George Lopez was escorted out of the building for using the f-word, but since he wasn’t able to prove that such an insult had been made, he deleted his post and just claimed that the comedian was escorted out.
George Lopez was listed as the Master of Ceremony for the event, but a source close to the comedian told FOX that Lopez segment was not supposed to last for more than four minutes. After Lopez left the stage, a local newscaster came in to take over the hosting duties.
Lenny Kravitz also performed at the gala, and $1.65 million was raised for juvenile diabetes.
