Despite claiming to have been trying to exercise restraint on being vocal over highly-charged topics on her social media, Demi Lovato just couldn’t help herself after Time Magazine made President Donald Trump runner-up for the “Person of the Year” title.
It’s not so much that he’s the runner-up that bothers Lovato. The fact that he’s getting honored directly behind women who’ve shared stories of sexual harassment and assault, however, is hypocritical in her view, tweeting the following message:
“Time mag highlights brave women coming forward against sexual assault on the cover but names a man with sexual assault allegations against him runner-up to the person of the year. Really TIME?”
Trump has been accused of sexual misconduct such as alleged kissing and groping by at least 16 women. All accusations have repeatedly been denied by both Trump and his press secretary, who accuse the women of making up the stories.
Time doesn’t choose the ‘Person of The Year’ based on that person’s actions having a positive or negative impact. The magazine only looks for “the person or persons who most affected the news and our lives” and “embodied what was important about the year.”
Regarding Time’s criteria, the “Tell Me You Love Me” singer said, “To be named POTY by TIME it should be for doing something positive or brave LIKE the women on the cover. It’s annoying that it’s just about impact on the news.”
She went on to retweet a follower’s suggestion that Kesha, who had a long legal battle with producer Dr. Luke over claims of his sexual assault, should have been included as an honoree on Time as well. Another notable contender for the honoree position not included was news commentator Gretchen Carlson, who was able to get CEO Roger Ailes to resign after her sexual harassment lawsuit from 2016.
Time defended their placing of Trump as runner-up because of how he’s “changed the rules of the presidency” during his first year in the White House, be it for better or worse.
