Cardi B Explains Why She Called Herself The ‘Trap Selena’

In her newest single “MotorSport” with Migos and Nicki Minaj, Cardi B called herself the ‘Trap Selena’ on her verse. This self-proclaimed title did not sit well with Selena Quintanilla fans, who criticized her for comparing herself to the Queen of Tejano music.

“Let me wrap my weave up, I’m the trap Selena, dame mas gasolina,” is the line that ignited the fire. Besides mentioning Selena, Cardi B also references Daddy Yankee’s Reggaeton hit single, “Gasolina” – an anthem of the genre.

The song dropped in October and Selena Quintanilla fans were quick to blast the New York rapper for her claim. It took Cardi B weeks to respond to the critics, but she finally did through her Twitter account.

“I said Trap Selena because who didn’t want to be Selena?” she wrote on Wednesday. “She is a alter ego that everybody would want to be and I want the world to know how much I love her.”

During an appearance on Power 106’s “The Cruz Show” in November, Selena’s sister approved of Cardi B’s comparison. “I think it’s an honor because it just shows that Selena is a legend and she’s being recognized,” Suzette Quintanilla said. “Not just in the Latino community or in Latin music, she’s worldwide.”

In related Cardi B news, her song Bodak Yellow started playing in a New York City subway station and everybody started dancing. People of all ages joined in, showing what an impact Cardi B has in music and the community of NYC.
