Cardi B Calls Herself The ‘Trap Selena’ On New Single

Last week, American trapper by excellence, Quvao, got fans all riled up with one tweet. “Wait til you see who executive produced Culture 2”, our collective digital hearts skipped a beat and our imaginations started running wilds with the possibilities of who this mysterious producer could be. While we are still in doubt about who could it be, the answer is looming on the near horizon now that Migos released the first star-studded single off Culture II titled “Motor Sport”, featuring industry heavy-hitters such as Cardi B and Nicki Minaj.

The trio previewed the track live last Thursday night, October 26 at Power 105.1’s Powerhouse show at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The song was officially released the next day the song Friday. The song was produced in collaboration between CuBeatz and MurderBeatz and features over five minutes of fire beats reminiscent of Future’s ‘Mask Off’ where Quavo uses his stage to take a shot at the New England Patriots ‘Deflategate’ scandal rapping, “Xans, Percy, check / Bill Belichick / Take the air out the ball / Just so I can flex.”

There is no better way to kick off the release of your fourth record than by featuring the ultimate diva dream team consisting of both Nicki Minaj and Cardi B. The “Bodak Yellow” superstar heavily references her Latino roots by honoring Daddy Yankee’s 2004 smash hit “Gasolina”, and also deeming herself the trap version of the late Queen of Tejano, Selena Quintanilla in a verse that is sure to break dance floors of every nightclub around the world “I’m the trap Selena/ Dame mas gasolina!”

However, it is speculated that Cardi’s ambitious statement could very well be about Nicky Minaj since it is believed the verses of their first official collaboration are actually about each other. Only time will tell if Cardi B can live up to the icon whose musical legacy is still very much in fashion today, not dated at all and dearly beloved by many generations. Nevertheless, Migos’ latest single makes a toast to contemporary female rap that is clearly on the rise and feels like a turning point in the way we consume popular music nowadays, everything about the single feels fresh and relevant to our times, make sure you take a listen and watch out for the future of these artists who have apparently come here to stay.
