Snowfall Covers Northern Mexico For The First Time In Decades

For the first time in years, cities throughout the northern part of Mexico are covered in snow after a strong snowfall started this Thursday. In Torreon and in Piedras Negras, such an occurrence had not taken place for up to 30 years.

Both cities are located in Coahuila, which shares a border with the United States. Social media users have documented the snow with pictures and videos, proclaiming this day to be “historic.”

In some zones, the snow has reached up to eight inches in thickness, claims the National Meteorological Service (SMN) from Mexico. In Coahuila, 142 hostels opened up to hand out blankets and jackets to those who need them.

The snowfall has also been registered in the states of Chihuahua, Sonora, Durango, Zacatecas and San Luis Potosi, were SNM reported temperatures below 23 degrees Fahrenheit, which could drop below 19 degrees Fahrenheit in certain areas.

In Balleza, Guerrero, Guachochi, and Cuauhtemoc in Chihuahua, classes got suspended for the day due to the snow. Schools remain open in the rest of the state, but parents were free to decide whether to have their children go to school or not.

Some of the highways belonging to the six states covered in snow were closed but just reopened. Various flights heading to the area got canceled, as well.

Temperatures are expected to reach 32 degrees Fahrenheit in the mountainous zones of Baja California, Nuevo Leon, Tamaulipas, Aguascalientes, Guanajuato, Hidalgo, the State of Mexico, Morelos, Puebla, Tlaxcala, and Veracruz. The higher regions of Jalisco, Queretaro, Michoacan, and Mexico City are also expected to drop to freezing temperatures.
