Mexican Stand-Up Comedians You Need to Watch on Netflix

Mexican stand-up comedy is enjoying a resurgence right now. More and more comedians are stepping up to the plate and changing things up. The comedy scene in Mexico consisted for a very long time of the same people, each with their own over-played gags (anyone remember Jojojorge Falcón or Teo González?). But Mexican Comedy is evolving and bringing you some of the best laughs you can find on Netflix.

Carlos Ballarta

Originally from Ciudad de México, Ballarta is considered one of the best Mexican stand-up comedians right now. His deadpan delivery, insanely accurate observations about every day life in Mexico, and unconventional look (he stated that his sunglasses are a permanent tribute to Kurt Cobain) make his material very different from the usual Mexican comedians, who rely mostly on exaggerated gestures and stories. His bit about allergies is nothing short of genius. Catch his special on Netflix “El Amor Es De Putos”.

Sofía Niño de Rivera

Sofía is from Mexico City and started her working life in the realm of PR and publicity. She grew tired of that scene and decided to transition from amateur to full-time stand up comedian. To say that she has enjoyed success is a bit of an understatement, considering she was featured on Conan O’Brien’s show “Made in Mexico”, landed a role on the very popular Netflix series “Club de Cuervos”, and was named Woman of the Year by Chilango Magazine in 2016. Her dark take on Mexican humor is a hilarious change from the usual lighthearted approach, and she is gorgeous, to boot. Don’t miss her Netflix special “Expuesta”.

Manu NNa

Considered the best gay comedian in Mexico, Manu NNa studied theater, specifically cabaret, where he developed his performing skills. In a very homophobic country like Mexico, Manu NNa stands up (no pun intended) and rubs his gayness on everybody’s faces, with hilarious results. His routine is daring (AIDS jokes included), but that’s what makes it endearing and a breath of fresh air in a very conservative culture. Catch him on his Netflix special “Simplemente Manu NNa”.

Daniel Sosa

At 23-years-old, Sosa’s career has skyrocketed. Mainly because of his on-point impersonations of various characters that are part of every Mexican’s life: que la tía, la abuelita, la vecina, el Godínez. The young comedian’s material is a direct evolution of the type of light-hearted comedy featured on Mexican TV for many years, but better, grittier and stronger. He said in an interview he’s a fan of Cantinfla’s movies and Polo Polo’s shows, which definitely shows in his work. You won’t want to miss “Sosafado”, his Netflix special.

Alan Saldaña

This irreverent standupero from Monterrey calls himself a “Comedy Ace” and has a 20 year long career to back that claim up. He is an expert on highlighting how absurd everyday life can be, specially if you don’t have the funds for it all. His in-your-face accent from Northern Mexico makes it all even funnier, as he demonstrates on his hilarious bit about Starbucks. His special “Mi Vida Pobre” is available on Netflix now.
