The comedy world has always been dominated by men, there is no question about that. But in the LATINO comedy world women are practically a rarity, if you’re not looking close enough, that is. Latinas in general offer a very unique point of view about life, but what happens when you mix that up with an incredible talent for humor? You get some of the funniest, realest comedy you’ll find anywhere. That’s why here are 5 ladies to look out for, so do yourself a favor and start looking them up!
Joanna Hausmann
Joanna captured YouTube’s heart with her series Joanna Rants on Flama (which she recently brought back on her own channel). She’s notorious for pointing out the hilarious differences between English and Spanish, and landed a gig as a correspondent on the Netflix series Bill Nye Saves the World. She’s from Venezuela and constantly takes actions to help her home country, raising awareness of the country’s difficult situation and donating to the cause. Funny AF with a social conscience? Yes please! Follow her on Facebook.
Cristela Alonzo
Cristela likes to keep it real! She got her start on the stand up scene along with all the big boys of Latin comedy, like Carlos Mencia, but then she went on to do her own thing and found success. She had her own sitcom “Cristela” on ABC, that aired for one season. You may have checked out most recent (and kid-friendly) gig was voicing Cruz Ramírez on Disney-Pixar’s Cars 3. Her Netflix special, Lower Classy is a must-see!
Anjelah Johnson
She got her big break with the hilarious character Ban Qui Qui, which she featured on YouTube and landed her a gig as a recurring cast member on MadTV (remember MadTV? Saturday Nights were never the same after it’s cancelation). She continues to do stand up, and has her own Netflix special, Not Fancy, where she warns you about European babies and the people who throw them.
Grace Parra
Grace Parra specializes on mixing totally hilarious and very deep reporting, resulting in the best kind of comedy: the one that makes you think while you laugh it all off. She is the creator, writer, and co-host of The Really Late Morning Show, a live comedy talk show in Hollywood featuring celebrity interviews, sketches, and musical guests. Follow her on Twitter!
