Given how fast Cardi B ascended in showbusiness, it’s only natural that fans start trying to guess everything regarding the rapper. The latest reveal is the reason for her stage name, with the singer letting us in on her backstory.
During a recent visit to The Wendy Williams Show, the Bodak Yellow singer said, “My sister’s name is Hennessy, so everybody used to be like ‘Bacardi’ to me,” she explained. “Then I shortened it to Cardi B.”
The 25-year-old hip-hop sensation also explained why the ‘B’ in her name is separate. “The ‘B’ stands for whatever, depending on the day…beautiful or bully,” she said. “No one calls me Belcalis except for my family, my mother, and my daddy.”
Cardi B, whose birth name is Belcalis Almanzar, revealed she had to grow into her name and that she still feels jealousy for her sister’s name. Her sister, Hennessy Carolina, got her name from the famous French cognac brand that happens to be the girls’ father’s favorite liquor.
On a YouTube video, Cardi B explained that her father was drinking Hennessy when he was on his way to the hospital for the birth of her sister. She also used the video to defend her sister’s name, which received criticism from fans for being “too ghetto.”
The artist ultimately scolded the negative comments with her signature cutthroat attitude. Cardi B and her sister Hennessy happen to be extremely close, displayed on a video circulating the web.
The video shows the sisters fooling around with their phones singing Mexican folk songs in Spanish that deal with being remorsefully drunk. They reference the classical Mexican meme of “Si ya saben como me pongo, pa’ que me invitan?” (If you know how I get, why do you invite me?)
In that same video, the sisters are in their hotel room singing pop songs before throwing comical tantrums. They are also shown spending quality time together as a family and pulling pranks, playing ding-dong-ditch on their hotel floor.
Given the time, we might be seeing Cardi’s sister make her debut in the music business. It looks like there is much of Hennessy on the ‘Trap Selena’ that we can account for, and given how much people have accepted Cardi B, having two of the same could turn the sisters into musical icons.
